And climate is the main reason in attracting numerous migratory birds into the state. The wildlife sanctuaries in Assam are a heterogeneous mixture of a variety of landscapes, plants, birds and animals.

Kaziranga National Park
It’s a World Heritage Site of UNESCO of roughly 400sq.km area. This wild life park is the largest habitat for one horned rhinoceros and several other unique flora and fauna. Kaziranga is a grassland situated in the central Assam region on the bank of the Brahmaputra; roughly 200km. east of Guwahati.
Attractions:
Close look at Rhino, Swamp deer etc. on ‘Elephant Safari’ every morning. Sighting variety of wildlife by ‘Jeep Safari’, thousands of local and migratory birds flocking in wetlands and the scenic beauty of Karbi Anglong Hills.
Mammals : The Park is the abode to more than 70% of One Horned Rhinoceros in the world. Highest density of tigers’ prey including the large prey biomass of tiger found in the country. Harbours more than 60% of India’s wild buffalo population along with the only population of the Eastern Swamp deer and seven species of turtles and tortoises. The other important wildlife found are – Leopard, Fishing Cat, other Lesser cats, Large Indian
Civet, Small Indian Civet, Sambar, Barking deer, Hog deer, Gaur, Hog Badger, Hoolock Gibbon, Capped Langur, Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Sloth Bear, Gangetic Dolphin and Otter etc.
Birds: Home to 25 Globally Threatened and 21 Near Threatened species of birds. So far
480 bird species have been identified and recorded in the Park. The Baza, Bengal Florican, Hornbills, Osprey etc. are the endangered species. Presence of Pelicans and various waterfowls both resident and migratory etc.
Aquatic Flora & Fauna- More than 150 perennial water bodies are located inside the Park, where water level fluctuates temporally resulting in the generation of a very rich aquatic floral diversity. More than 32 species of flora have so far been identified. More than 60 species of fishes have been recorded and is the breeding ground of many of the local species.

Manas National Park
This wildlife park is situated on the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, where the river Manah flows with picturesque turns and clean water and sandy beaches. Although Manas is primarily a tiger reserve, it possesses numerous other valuable flora and fauna; the park is situated roughly 150km west of Guwahati.
Manas was originally a game reserve since 1928 and became a Tiger Reserve in 1974, a World Heritage Site in 1985, a Biosphere Reserve in 1989. Then declared as a National Park in 1990 with an area of 500 sq. kms. and also the core area of 2600 sq. kms. of Chirang Ripu Elephant Reserve. The park harbours more than 20 endangered species and is famous for its unique scenic beauty. It is also an Important Bird Area. White Winged Wood Duck was recently recorded in the Park.

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park
It is a wonderful habitat of numerous birds; there are feral horses on the islands of the Brahmaputra close to the park. this National Park is also a Biosphere Reserve having an area of 340 sq. kms. in Tinsukia district.An unique habitat endemic to Dibru-Saikhowa only, a habitat which has undergone radical transformation after the great earthquake of 1950. The migratory birds are a major attraction.

Nameri National Park
This a national park with of 200 sq. kms. area is located in the foothills of the EasternHimalayas in the Sonitpur District of Assam, India bordering Arunachal Pradesh, about 35 kilometres fromTezpur. It is also the core area of Nameri Tiger Reserve (344 Sq. km.). One can enjoy rafting in the Jia Bhoroli river in the south-western boundary.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sanctuary harbors the world’s highest density of one horned Rhinoceros, located in Morigaon district, but close to GuwahatiCity. The habitat comprises of Assam alluvial grassland with hilly forests for an area of 38.81 sq. kms. This is also an Important Bird Area.
Attractions:
Mammals: A total of 81 Rhinoceros were sighted during the estimation in April, 2006. Other mammals found are Leopard, Leopard cat, Fishing cat, Jungle cat, feral Buffalo, Wild pigs, Chinese pangolins etc.
Birds: Altogether 375 species of both migratory and resident birds of 46 families have been recorded so far, with 14 listed in the Indian Red Data Book.

Garampani Wildlife Sanctuar
This Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest sanctuary of Assam. It is located in the Karbi Anglong area. Garampani in local language means ‘hot water’ and the Wildlife Sanctuary by this name is famous for its hot springs and waterfalls. The sanctuary is rich in its bio-diversity. Some rare birds can be seen in this sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to hoolock gibbons and golden langurs and also having having 51 rare species of Orchid.

The Sanctuary is located on the southern bank of river Brahmaputra with an area of 70.13 sq. kms. in the district of Nagaon and is a part of Laokhowa -Burachapori eco-system. An idea! habitat for Rhinoceros and Wild Buffalo.

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary
This Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Darrang district of Assam, south of the Himalayan foothills bordering Bhutan. It is named after the river Bornadi that flows on its western border. The Sanctuary of only 26.22 sq. kms. Area and is an ideal bhabar tract. The Sanctuary was constituted especially for the protection and conservation of Hispid Hare and Pigmy Hog.

Chakrasila Wildlife Sanctuary
This wild life sanctuary is falling under Dhubri andKokrajhar districts of Assam and is mainly a hilly tract running north-south and there are two lakes (Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel) on either side, which are integral to the eco-system of the sanctuary.
Its area is approximately 45.50 sq. kms.,It s the second home of Golden Langur off the foothills of Himalaya.

Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary
This Wildlife Sanctuary is set in a breathtaking locale that covers a moderate expanse of 44.06 sq. km. The wildlife reserve lies on the northern bank of the turbulent Brahmaputra River in Sonitpur District. The Sanctuary is a part of Laokhowa – Burachapori , eco-system and comprises of a mosaic of wet alluvial grassland, riparian and semi-evergreen forests dotted by wetland and river system.

Nestled in between the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, the Disang and the Demow rivers the Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary has a rich wetland ecosystem with an area of 33.93 sq. kms, just 22kms away Sivasagar , a leadind town of Assam.

Birds : A paradise of migratory and resident birds, 50 far 165 species of Birds have been identified and recorded. A place for quite high concentration of Geese and other Migratory birds. Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary
Formerly known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Reserve Forest, is an isolated protected area of evergreen forest located in Jorhat district Assam with a small area of 20.98 sq. kms. A semi-evergreen forests and evergreen patches amidst tea gardens and human settlements, the Sanctuary is named after the only Ape (Hoolock Gibbon) found in India.

Bherjan-Borajan-Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is is a small wildlife sanctuary with an area of 7.22 square kilometer.in 3 separate blocks is located in Tinsukia district and is an ideal habitat for the Primate species.
Attractions:
Mammals : Some of the mammals found in the Sanctuary are Slow Loris, Assamese Macaque, Pig tailed Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped Langur and Hoc-lock Gibbon, besides few Leopards, Wild Pigs and Giant Flying Squirrel etc.
Birds: 84 species of birds have been found including Osprey, Kingfisher, Indian
Pied Hornbill, Lmeated Barbet, Woodpecker, Drongo, Common Mynah, Bulbul,
Magpie Robin, Wagtail and varieties of woodland birds.

This sanctuary, the treasure trove of Assam’s natural heritage is housed in Karbi Anglong district’ wit an area of 221.81 sq. km and is strategically located to facilitate tourism and accessibility to the state. Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary
Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Karbi Anglong District in Central Assam amidst the Himalayan forests covered with tropical forests and the vast low-lying plains. The sanctuary is conveniently sited at a distance of 25 km from Golaghat and 65 km from the renowned KazirangaNational Park.
It harbours 51 rare species of Orchid.

Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary, spreading 451.00 sq. kms. is located in Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council. It is an important component of Dhansiri- Lungding Elephant Reserve It mostly consists of undulating and hilly terrain with numerous rivers and streams.

Nambor – Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary, spreading in 97.15 sq. kms. in 3 blocks, is located in Golaghat district and is famous for Hot water springs and one can easily sight Gaur and Hoolock Gibbon here.

The Sanctuary spreading in an area of 78.64 sq. kms. is located in the eastern fringe of Guwahati city. It is a worth visiting place in the city.

Dehing Patkai Wildlife Santuary
The Sanctuary with an area of 111.19 Sq. Kms. is located in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts . Dehing Patkai, is the only rainforest in Assam , mostly famous for Assam Valley Tropical Wet Evergreen Forests bordering Arunachal Pradesh. The Sanctuary is a part of the Dehing-Patkai Elephant Reserve having the World War II cemeteries nearby, along with the Stiltwell Road and the oldest refinery of Asia in Digboi and ‘open cast’ coal mining at Lido.

Borail Wildlife Sanctuary
Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the two southern most district of Assam state in North East India. It is the combination of two reserve forest, NorthCacharReserveForest and Borail Reserve forest with an area of 326.24 sq. kms.

Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park
The Orang National Park, located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam with a spread of 78.80 sq. kms, was declared a National Park on 13 April 1999 and later renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park. It is also known as the mini Kaziranga National Park (IUCN site) since the two parks have a similar landscape made up of marshes, streams and grasslands and are inhabited by the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. The park has a rich flora and fauna, including Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, pigmy hog, elephants, wild buffalo and tigers

Reptiles : Indian Rock Python, Black Krait, King Cobra, Cobra, Monitor Lizard.
Turtles : Seven species of Turtle and Tortoise.
How to reach : The nearest Airport Salonibari (Tezpur) is 80 kms. and the LGBI Guwahati Airport is 150 kms. The National Park is located 18 kms. south of the N.H. 52 at Dhansirighat and the distance to Mangaldai is 70 kms. and Guwahati is 150 kms.
Where to stay: Satsimalu Rest House – the most sought after accommodation as it provides a vintage point for viewing wildlife and Silbori Rest House at the Range H.Q. A Tourist Lodge located near the entrance to the park managed by the Tourism Department can accommodate 16 people at a time. It has 8 cottages.
The Forest Dormitory is located at the Gate and provides group accommodation
for 40 people, without bedding and food.
